Make it Monday: Getting Creative at the Children’s Creativity Museum in San Francisco

Happy Monday!

I took the day off a couple of Friday’s ago to take Dahlia on a day date to the Children’s Creativity Museum in San Francisco at Yerba Buena Gardens. I had always wanted to take her here and a weekday seemed like the best opportunity for me to do so where it wouldn’t be crowded even though there seemed to be a big conference happening at Moscone Center, but when is there not.

The museum itself isn’t too big, so it was a perfect date for an afternoon. It’s split into different rooms and sections and open enough to where Dahlia could run to one thing to another with the short attention span that toddlers have ;).

Community Lab

We started our day in the Community Lab because Dahlia was drawn to the dark room and bright lights that “Sketch Town” had to offer. Here, kids can create their own car or building and scan it into Sketch Town. Pretty cool concept and you can actually touch the items the kids make on the screens to spark an animation.

Imagination Lab

Next, we headed to the Imagination Lab which is perfect for Dahlia and kids 5 and under. Here we started our journey at the AR Sandboxes. What kid doesn’t like playing with sand? There were projectors above the sand so kids can learn topography and create their own landscapes.

The Imagination Lab had so many different spaces and I swear Dahlia could spend the entire afternoon here. They had Floam on tables to play with, a train table, big foam blocks to create forts, storybook park to read a story in a comfy bean bag, magnetic tiles, and even a puppet theater where kids can dress up and create their own shows.

Lastly, we went into the DIY Station and created some fun paper items which were inspired by the supplies they had available on the tables: paper plates, glue sticks, scissors, markers and paper.

Music Studio

After we took a break for lunch, we came back to the museum to the second floor. While we made our way up, we always saw many art projects by kids in what they call the “Spiral Gallery.” Those were also fun to look at too!

When we made it to the Music Studio, Dahlia was a bit shy at first and didn’t want to join in on the fun, but she warmed up and eventually ended up making three music videos! They have outfits you can change into, lists of popular kid songs to choose from and a green screen to create your music video with background of choice as well. I loved this! We were even emailed the videos after we were done. SCORE! (Though it could take up to 36 hours to receive per uploading purposes.)

Innovation Lab

After singing her lungs out in the Music Studio, we headed into the Innovation Lab where Dahlia was handed a Mystery Box. She chose an age appropriate card from one of the museum friends and she had to make a home for a giraffe using all the items in her box.

This was a fun activity for Dahlia to really stretch her imagination. With a little help from me, she created a fun home for a giraffe, which happens to be one of her favorite animals!

Animation Studio

Our last stop within the museum was the Animation Studio. Though we had tried to create something here before, we came back a second time around when a field trip of kids cleared out so it was much quieter. We made a clay character using metal wire and colored clay. Then, the friends of the museum helped us understand how claymation worked and we made a quick video with our new superhero Dahlia made.

We spent a good four hours here and the only room we didn’t visit was the Robot Coding Room just based on Dahlia’s age, but overall we had a great afternoon. When the museum closed, Dahlia and I headed to the carousel just outside which was $3 (we got a $1 discount for showing that we went to the museum). Jason met us up and had an evening out in the city. ‘Twas a perfect day for a day off 🙂
