Travel Tuesday: Visiting the Color Factory in San Francisco

In April, we checked out the Color Factory in San Francisco. Tickets went on sale again and we took the opportunity to see what all the hype was about and luckily for my husband, this was the last POP UP museum I could buy tickets for. 🙂 And recently I’ve found out that they have closed the San Francisco location and will be opening up in NYC this Summer.

We went on a Monday night, so it wasn’t too crazy downtown.  We started our tour on the colorful rainbow stairs to our sensory filled tour, but before we began, we were greeted by an employee who gave us Color Factory cards that were used for the hi-def cameras spread throughout the museum. These were clutch when you have a doting toddler and rarely get a hands-free opportunity for a family photo. Definitely something I think the Museum of Ice Cream lacked.

One of our first stops was the “scratch-n-sniff” wall.  There were so many different scents that brought me back to specific times in my life and don’t mind Dahlia’s unmatched buttons. 😉

Next, we headed to the macaron station and though I’m not necessarily a fan of macarons, the ones they had were probably the best I’ve ever had made from Artisan Macaron :). Bravo! They were delicious!

Next, we headed to the Black and White room where we had some “Black Magic” juice made by Project Juice to help wash down the Macaron that was a little tart and just sweet enough.

Next, we headed to the Orange Room which was mostly just a room filled with all things orange for a great photo-op.

From here, we headed to the Blue Balloon Bath Room. This was another photo-op type room and very small.

After the balloon room, we headed to a dark room called the Light Bright room. This was like a giant size Light Bright toy from my childhood. Super fun, though I’ve seen a few of these in kid play spaces throughout the Bay Area.

Next, we headed to the music-filled  Disco Diamonds room. With Justin Timberlake playing in the background and flashes of light from the disco balls on the walls, I didn’t want to leave. There were a few kids dancing in the center getting dizzy.img_8572

Potty Break! On our way to the next room, I couldn’t resist taking a photo of some of the funny jokes on the wall in the restroom. This one was probably my favorite. Tee hee!

On our way to the next area, we passed through this colorfully lit wall…

Next, we headed to the Green Doodle Room. There were two giant markers you could use to draw on the wall. This actually took a while since there are obviously more than two people at a time. We didn’t mind though, but this does slow your time down.

Ahh, the infamous Ribbon Room. Here, you see Instagram boomerangs happening left and right and we were no exception. What else are you supposed to do with thousands of ribbon hanging from the ceiling?

Much like the Ribbon Room, the Confetti Accumulation Room was another spot of Instagram Boomerang sightings. This room also had the hi-def camera in middle that made for an awkward conversation of who’s next.

Across the Confetti Room is the #selfie Room and though I didn’t really understand how this room worked, there were photos that were constantly being printed and dumped out onto the floor. This is definitely not the room for a germaphobe.

Our last stop on our tour was the Yellow Room. The obvious activity here was the giant ball pit. This was way larger than the sprinkles pool at the Museum of Ice Cream and it had ceiling cameras in different spaces for awesome photo ops. Being pregnant, I had to be a bit more careful but we had a blast in here.

After 10 to 20 minutes of playing in the ball pit, we headed out to find a small yummy ice cream treat waiting for us. A perfect ending to an eventful evening.

Overall, we had a wonderful evening and experience. At some points it was sensory overload, but I think that’s what the museum was hoping for. Each room gave you a different feel and energy. It’s definitely something I wont forget, especially those macarons.

Happy exploring!
