Make it Monday: DIY Door Mats

Happy Monday!

Lately I’ve been trying to fix up our patio as the exterior of our house tends to be ignored since we mostly focus on the interior. So, I’ve done some touch up painting and was also looking online for a new doormat when it occurred to me that I could just make one myself. So I did!

Disclaimer: I used the Cricut to make the stencils for the door mats, but you could also purchase stencils from craft stores or even make simple funky patterns using painter’s tape.

I have recently bought a Cricut Explorer 2, a smart cutting machine, which is something I’ve wanted for a while. My sister has one and I’ve seen her make some amazing items so I bought one as a push present to myself (and easily something that could occupy what little down time I have during maternity leave). And during Amazon’s Prime Day, I saw it was discounted (since it never is) and I jumped on the opportunity to buy one. Whooo!

Continuing on…

Here’s how to make your very own door mat!

What You’ll Need:

  • Card stock Paper for Cricut users or Stencils for non-Cricut users
  • Gloss Enamel Paint
  • Paint Brushes and sponge/foam brush
  • 18 in. X 30 in. Natural Coir Plain Door Mat (I got mine at Orchard Supply Hardware, but they also sell them at Target and Home Depot as well)
  • Painters Tape or Push Pins

Instructions:

Step 1: For Cricut users, create your stencil using a fun text or shape. Here, I used the phrase “oh hello” using the font Autery from Dafont.com. Then, I also added the small heart from the shapes section and had them cut on the cricut with card stock to create my stencil.

For non-cricut users, grab your stencils or painters tape to create a pattern on your plain mat.

Step 2: Tape or pin down your stencil onto the mat in your desired location. Use a ruler if you’d like it to be centered. Here, I taped down the stencil, below, I used pins for the corgi door mat.

Step 3: Next, grab your gloss enamel paint and start dabbing with your spongey brush for the wider parts and use a paint brush for the more intricate parts of your stencil.

Step 4: When step 3 is complete, let the paint dry and remove the stencil to see your wonderful work. Use a thin paint brush to do any touch ups.

That’s it! This is such a fun and easy DIY project that you can finish it in about an hour. This also makes a great gift!

Below I’ve also made a corgi-inspired door mat for my sister that came out really cute too!

Enjoy and happy making!!

  3. Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!

  6. You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be actually something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complex and extremely broad for me. I’m looking forward for your next post, I’ll try to get the hang of it!
