Foodie Friday: Birthday Dinner at International Smoke

A couple of weeks ago, we hit the town to celebrate my husband Jason’s birthday at Ayesha Curry’s International Smoke.  We had gone to her quick serve cafeteria style restaurant in Oahu and enjoyed it and thought we should check out her casual sit down restaurant in the City.  We, of course, made reservations for a late dinner with Dahlia since it was a Wednesday and we had swimming lessons right before, but we want her to know that birthdays mean you go against the regular schedule sometimes.

When we arrived, we, of course, were the only ones with a child in tow, but we wanted to celebrate as a family. We got seated almost right away and even before our reservation time.

When we got to our table, there was a birthday card waiting for Jason which was a nice touch (thanks to OpenTable.com :)).

After previously checking out the menu beforehand, I mentioned to Jason that Ayesha’s Tasting Menu might be a good option for us to try out her signature dishes and that’s exactly what we went for except we also ordered a couple of extra things we wanted to try.

For Dahlia, we ordered the Smoked Rib Tip Mac & Cheese. We liked this so much at her restaurant in Oahu that we knew this was going to be Dahlia’s dinner for the evening. It’s cheesy, the meat on top is cooked and marinated perfectly and has a nice cornbread crumble to top it off. They also brought this out first so she wouldn’t be waiting too long for her food. I always appreciate this as a parent because toddlers especially can be very impatient :).

Tasting Menu:

Snack

Our first item was the snack, a red curry soup with a chunk of Dungeness crab with peanuts and a side of cornbread. This was really savory, slightly spicy and I slurped it all up wishing I had ordered the whole bowl, but I knew there was more coming. This is a delicious soup and I’d definitely order it again.

Salad

Next on the tasting menu was the smoked burrata salad. It comes in dramatically as a dome covered salad. As they remove the dome, the smoke hits your nose to smell the scents and flavors this salad has to offer. This salad comes with an array of crispy spring vegetables and prosciutto.

From the Smoker

Next on the tasting menu, we received the trio of ribs and the papaya salad. I am a sucker for a good tasting fresh papaya salad and I liked it so much when I had it in Hawaii that I was happy to see it accompany the ribs in the tasting menu. Jason also ordered the Garlic Fried Rice though it wasn’t on the tasting menu to accompany his ribs, which I thought tasted okay but didn’t stand out compared to other things we had. Rice is rice 🙂

From the Left, the Ribs were a sticky, spicy and sweet Korean Gochujang style rib, then the tasty Mexican Adovada style ribs, and lastly, the American BBQ. After eating mostly vegetarian and vegan, I tried these out and the flavors from the Korean and Mexican style ribs made me enjoy this special birthday treat. I wasn’t as big a fan for the American style BBQ rib though.

From the Land

Last of the savory dishes from the tasting menu was the Grilled Wagyu, White Beans, Greens and Sun-Dried Tomatoes. This was probably my favorite dish of the evening or maybe because I haven’t eaten meat in a long while that it was extra delicious. The waiter was so nice that he even made sure the pieces I ate were cooked all the way through. (He noticed I was pregnant when I used the restroom and though he was a young guy, definitely knew what a pregnant girl’s restrictions are. Extra points for Customer Service***)

Is there a way I can transfer all my wordpress posts into it? Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated!
