Foodie Friday: I Scream, You Scream, We all Scream for the Museum of Ice Cream

Hooray! We finally got a chance to partake in the coveted Museum of Ice Cream which opened in San Francisco last year.  Tickets are nearly impossible to get and I’ve even signed up for email notices when they do their ticket releases, but I always seem to be um, working and teaching classes. Sigh. Well, luckily for me, one of my co-workers was on two devices trying to get tickets and got in to the queue. He asked me if I wanted tickets and I excitedly said, “YES!”

And at $38 a pop (kids 2 and under are free, you definitely pay a steep price for your curiosity and being on the “in”, but the exclusivity is what makes it what it is. I was finally going to take a dip into the sprinkle pool that my inner girl always wanted to do and the best part was I got to share it with my husband and Dahlia; and that to me is priceless.

So, off we went on a random Monday evening in the City.  It made for an awesome family date night and seeing Dahlia’s expressions throughout the whole museum was totally worth it.

Our first stop in the museum was seeing the Ice Cream vault which is significant because the building is an old bank.

Next, we got to play ring toss on whip cream cans. Jason actually got two during his turn to receive a ticket for 10% off the museum store and we, of course, forgot to use it. So, if you win, don’t be us and actually use it if you want to purchase anything at the end of your tour.

This room had lots of eye candy for me to take photos of too.

Next, we headed into the Scooping room where we got to sample a cup of vanilla custard with cherry sorbet mixed together by Double Rainbow and it was delicious! It was probably my personal favorite sample of the evening.

This was an awesome room that looked like an old school diner or ice cream parlor from the 60’s complete with a working jukebox. We stayed until Dahlia ate every last bite.

Next, we headed into the “Make a Statement” room which was an entire room filled with pink refrigerator magnets that you can actually purchase at the museum store. Here, we got to try mochi ice cream samples by my/mo. Dahlia and I had the strawberry and Jason got the cookies ‘n cream. YUM!

After quickly eating her mochi ice cream, Dahlia hurried into the next area to get her cotton candy that looked like it had glitter on the top. The best part was enjoying this treat in a room filled with oversized clouds and cherries. And just an FYI, the cherry wallpaper is not scratch-and-sniff. I asked the worker and also tried it out myself ;).

Gummy Garden was our next stop. Other than a photo op with our girl, this room  was more eye candy than anything else. Who wouldn’t want to take a photo with giant gummy bears?

Next on our tour was the Ice Cream Truck room. The wallpaper and flooring in here was probably my favorite of all the rooms. The nostalgic photos of ice cream treats reminded me of my youth and the large push pops made me smile as those were always my pick from the ice cream trucks.

The Rainbow hallway was next. a pretty little section and I couldn’t help but have my model Dahlia pose for me and I love what the rainbow stands for.

We were due for a sample and with perfect timing, we arrived in the unicorn room and a mini ice cream cone of unicorn milk was waiting for us. A perfect little treat to enjoy this colorful room.

Inside the same room were the unicorn stables and whattya know, they were filled with glass mirrors like a disco ball. It felt a little claustrophobic so take your photos quickly!

The pink rock climbing wall was next and Dahlia wasn’t too into it though I did see a few sweaty people try it out. She was more interested in the pack of Pop Rocks that were up next.

POP ROCKS! a favorite candy of mine; the next stop gave out samples and the worker here took a family photo of us in this passageway to the next special room.

After making our way through the museum without a glitch we hit a wall, er, more like a line.  This could only mean the Sprinkles Pool was next and while we did wait a while to get there for a 5 minute dip it was worth not missing. If you’re a germaphobe, though, you’d definitely want to skip it. Dahlia and I had fun in here though we left with a few extra sprinkles in our clothing :).

After the sprinkles dip, you head to the sprinkles shower to try to get those extra sprinkles out of your clothes. Needless to say, we had fun playing with the air hoses.

Our tour was coming to an end and swings in individual rooms were last. Overall, we had a great time though I did think the museum was going to be bigger. We did, however, take home a couple of souvenirs from the museum store and you can buy another scoop of ice cream on your way out if you need more!
