Thrifty Thursday: Repurposing an old TV Armoire for a Kid’s Closet

I love re-doing old furniture and making it into something new and useful.  We bought this old black armoire about 6 or 7 years ago when we were living in our condo.  We bought it off of Craigslist from a realtor that used it for staging for about $20 and it didn’t even have the doors attached.

Here are the 5 quick & easy steps to make that old armoire new again:

1.  Sand Down Any Worn Edges

Bella (our younger dog) used to hide under the armoire and chew on the legs when she was a teething puppy.  So, we had to do a lot of sanding to make bottom edges smooth again.  You may not need to do this.  Actually, most people don’t need to, but just in case – you can sand 🙂

2.  Paint & Seal!

We painted the armoire white to match the other furniture in the nursery and sealed it with a top coat (spray paint was easiest to use).  Also, making this “white” was easy because it gave it a more vintage look with the black undertones.

3.  Add New Hardware

We bought crystal drawer knobs from Anthropologie to complete the look.  They have some great hardware and came in all different shapes and sizes.  They always have good sales on hardware too.

4.  Add a Curtain Rod for Hanging

We added a curtain rod from Target and it was super easy to install.

5.  Add Accessories & Final Touches

Kids clothes, especially babies, are small so you can fit storage boxes underneath for added space.  I bought these white storage boxes at Target.

…and voila!  There you have it!  A new way to use an old armoire that’ll be a fun weekend project that’ll not only look good, but be useful in any kid’s room.  We don’t have much closet space in our house so this was a good alternate to adding closet space to the nursery without it looking out of place.

Happy repurposing!
