Even if you’ve never considered trapping yourself in a room with some non-claustrophobic friends and solving puzzles to get yourself out, “escape rooms” are all the rage in the Bay Area and a perfect way to celebrate the Halloween season.

If you’re anything like me (a fraidy-cat adult) and hate haunted houses or scary movies, but love a mystery and still want to feel festive this Halloween, then book yourself an escape room for you and your pals. It’ll give you an excuse to flex your intellectual prowess and if you pull off an escape, you can brag all about it on Instagram.

So, instead of heading out on a ghost tour or visiting the Winchester Mystery House (although you can do that too, if you can handle the scares!), check out these fun Halloween-esque escape rooms and have a crack at it.

Omescape, Richmond and San Jose

The Richmond location offers three different escape rooms and ranges from two to ten players. At this Omescape location, they have pretty realistic set ups and an awesome lobby full of board games to start your brains going before you head to your room. Try the Penitentiary to get yourself in the Halloween spirit, but beware there is only a 15% success rate for this room.

The San Jose location is bigger than the one in Richmond and has five total escape rooms to play in. With names like “The Dark Altar,” “The Joker’s Asylum,” and “Kingdom of Cats,” you know this is a perfect place to celebrate the spooktacular season.

Trapped in a Room with a Zombie, San Francisco

If being trapped in a room with a zombie doesn’t scream “Halloween,” then I don’t know what does. At “Trapped,” a zombie is literally chained to the wall and every five minutes another foot of chain is released. You only have one hour to figure out all the puzzles to get the key that gets you out so you don’t get eaten by the hungry zombie. Ahhhh!

Real Escape Game, San Jose & San Francisco

Originally from Japan, Real Escape Game has two Bay Area locations with fun and interactive games and puzzles that help you escape a room within 60 mins. Their San Jose location offers two different escape games, while the San Francisco location offers four games. One new exciting room is a detective game called Eight Suspects, where you learn that a teacher has been murdered –and you have to try to figure out who the killed them … or be killed yourself. Muah-ha-ha!

Reason, San Francisco

If you’re looking for more of a “techie” experience, then Reason is your place. At Reason, the same rules apply as most of the other escape rooms — but with a twist perfect for the Bay Area: you need to solve puzzles to get out while experimenting with some of the most exciting technology of Silicon Valley. Say whaa?!

Yes, you get to pilot a drone, dive into virtual reality, try 3D printing, control a robot and much more to stop the ‘reactor’ from going off. So grab at least 4 other friends to join this exciting bone-chilling adventure.
