“Make it” Monday: DIY Starburst Mirror

Star_5

Hope you are all enjoying your 3-day  weekends traveling or enjoying the snow  as we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  I, on-the-other-hand, have been  home taking care of our sick baby.  šŸ™  No fun for any parent, but it means, I had time to blog with one hand as I cradled Dahlia in the other.

Today’s DIY project is super easy and will look great in any home, whether you like traditional or even mid-century modern decor.  I was inspired by this Starburst Mirror I saw at EQ3 when looking for home decor.  It retails for $49.99.

I actually made 2 different Starburst Mirrors, one with thin dowels for the baby’s room shown on the left and one with thicker dowels for the living room.  Both cost less than $25 and can be done in a couple hours.

Here’s what they look like in each room, the nursery & the living room.  I think they brighten up any boxy room & add texture and dimension to any room.

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Wooden Dowels (Thick or Thin ~4 packs, ~$2.99 pack)
  • Flat Circular Mirror (~$1)
  • Rope (~$2 for 1/4 yard)
  • Glue Gun & Glue Sticks
  • Painter’s Tape
  • Gold Spray Paint (~$7)

Step 1:  Read Tutorial

I followed HGTVā€™s Tutorial on creating the starburst mirror, but instead of using branches, I used dowels from Michael’s (shown below).

Step 2:  Arrange Dowels & Glue

On the back side of the mirror, arrange dowels so that one is higher and one is lower.  Continue the pattern as you glue them down.  It doesn’t have to be perfect either.  I also added these sticky hooks on the back to help hang on our wall.

Step 3:  Prep Rope & Glue Down

I bought about ~1/4 yard of this rope that I thought would tie the mirror all together.

Glue it down on the perimeter of the front side of the mirror.

Step 4:  Cover & Spray Paint

Next, you want to use the painters tape & place it all over the mirror and cover where you don’t want the paint.  Place the mirror on newspaper outside & spray paint it gold or whatever color you want it to be.

Let dry overnight again!

Step 5:  Hang on Wall & Enjoy!

This super easy mirror will have your home looking amazing in no time AND you saved money by creating yourself!  Enjoy!
