This year, we had so much fun planning Dahlia’s 2nd birthday party with an obvious Sesame Street theme. It’s the one show we let Dahlia watch on TV regularly and a love for Elmo that is beyond me. Here are some DIY highlights from her birthday party in June.
Welcome sign: At the entrance of our house I made this welcome sign. (Chalkboard & chalkboard pens bought on Amazon)
Sesame Street sign: of course, we had to add the “Dahlia Street” sign in front of the house. My niece helped wrap the post.
Cake: this is one I didn’t make :). The Abby and Elmo birthday cake, we bought at Safeway annnnd, it may look funny because Jason almost dropped it on his way into the house. ? (Elmo birthday candle bought on Amazon)
Guestbook: I made the sign for Dahlia’s guestbook using Power Point and bought this old school Elmo Birthday Book for people to sign.
Decor: I made paper poufs from tissue paper I bought at the Dollar Tree and paid $3.99 for the face cut outs via A La Folie Designs on Etsy. My mom and dad actually helped out a lot cutting the intricate pieces and then hung them outside.
Party Hats: For the Party Hats I used a template here using card stock paper bought from Michael’s. I also bought brown felt for oscars eyebrows and orange foam paper for Elmo’s nose. I bought elastic cord for all the hats and also yellow feathers for the big bird ones on Amazon. Lastly, I found big circle confetti pieces in black and white that I used for eyes and mouths. And believe it or not, I used post it note paper for big birds nose.
Games: With the help of my niece, we made this fun cookie toss game. I grabbed a big cardboard box and cut a hole (big enough so the cookie bean bags would fit). I bought a blue posterboard at Target and I drew a Cookie Monster and then she added the cookies on the bottom and top by painting. I bought felt fabric sheet at Michaels and used bean bags from another game I have and we hot glued the felt together for both the cookie and the chocolate chips. The prize for this game was appropriately chocolate chip cookies.
I had a few other games going on but unfortunately, didn’t take photos. ?
- Oscar’s Trash Toss – I just used crumpled up paper and mini silver garbage cans to toss them in. Prizes for this game were gummy worms to symbolize Oscar’s pet worm, Slimey.
- Pin the Nose on Elmo – I bought this game on Amazon but it also doubles as good decor because it fits on a wall or door. The prize for this game was Goldfish crackers to symbolize Elmo’s pet goldfish, Dorothy.
- Super Grover Takes Flight – This one took a bit more effort as I had to make a small makeshift seesaw for a mini Grover I bought on Amazon. I bought a small piece of wood and plastic piping from Lowes and connected them together. I bought a blow up hammer at a Japanese store and kids hit one side of the seesaw to make Grover fly into a bucket. Prizes were blue lollipops that Symbolize Grover and made little superhero tags that look like Super Grovers.
- Ernie’s Rubber Ducky Match – another game I had in the backyard is a very popular carnival game. I bought plastic rubber ducks on Amazon that already had matching numbers on the bottom. I used Dahlia’s mini pool that we use when it gets hot and bought it at Marshall’s. This was super easy to put together and I bought different kinds of rubber ducks from Oriental Trading Company. (And Dahlia’s friends thought to have a makeshift pool party with the ducks ?)
Sweet Treats: In addition to cake, we made white chocolate pretzel rods AKA Abby’s Magic Wands. (See below for a quick DIY of these)
We also made Cookie Monster’s Chocolate Chip cookies from the cookie dough I bought from my niece’s fundraiser.
We also made rice Krispy treats which are my go to dessert and just cleverly named them Big Birds Bird Seed Treats.
To Make Abby’s Pretzel Magic Wands:
What you’ll need:
- Large Pretzel Rods
- White chocolate Candiquik
- Purple food coloring
- Sprinkles
- Wax paper or SaranWrap
Directions:
- Melt Candiquik chocolate in microwave. Stir until smooth.
- Add food coloring to desired color.
- Set up drying stations for wands using wax paper or SaranWrap.
- Dip pretzel rod and shake off excess chocolate.
- Add sprinkles
- Enjoy!
Invitation: The last DIY item I made was the actual invitation for the party. Jason’s aunt gave me a couple of boxes of old greeting cards from a warehouse sale she went to. When I saw all the circles, I instantly knew what I could turn it into using small white dot circles, and pens.
The party itself, was so much fun and a highlight for Dahlia was having Elmo & all her friends to join her on her special day!
