“Make it” Monday: DIY Papier-Mâché Newsprint Animal Deer Head

This is probably one of my favorite DIY projects to date & I still get asked by many on how I made it.  The inspiration actually came to me when I went to a West Elm and saw this on display when we first bought our house.  I immediately saw it & said, “I could make that.”  My husband didn’t believe me and now 2 years later, it still hangs over his side of the bed in our bedroom.  🙂

West Elm – $99    |        DIY Deer Head – $9

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Newspaper
  • Masking or Painter’s Tape
  • Mod Podge (for Papier-Mache)
  • Small Tub or Bucket
  • Cardboard
  • Toilet Paper & Paper Towel Tubes
  • Book (Bought one with a lot of writing from Salvation Army for $.025)
  • Paint Brush
  • Paper Towels

Step 1:  FOLLOW TUTORIAL TO CREATE BASE OF ANIMAL

I followed Lil Blue Boo’s Tutorial on creating the base of the animal.  She created a unicorn instead of a deer head, but I found it worked just the same.  I followed her all the way up until the ears.  I used the photo of the West Elm Deer Head to attach the cardboard ears to my deer head.

Step 2:  Create Antlers and Attach

Use paper towel tubes, unravel and reshape into longer antler base.  Then, use smaller toilet paper tubes to create smaller antlers that connect to the paper towel tubes and TAPE, TAPE, TAPE!… Until it feels sturdy.

Step 3:  Prep the Mod Podge & Start Papier-Mâché 

Cut paper towels into strips to start the Papier-Mâché  process with the mod podge and paint brush.

Let dry overnight.

Step 4:  Final Layering of Newsprint

Cut book words into small pieces and begin Papier-Mâché all over until it is completely covered.  I chose a book from the Salvation Army that had a lot of words in it and ironically it was a book about hikes in San Francisco 🙂

Let dry overnight again!

Step 5:  Hang on Wall & Enjoy!

Like I said, I made this more than 2 years ago and its still strong and sturdy as ever.  It’s hung up on the wall in my master bedroom with the help of a small shelf.

In the tutorial, Lil Blue Boo puts the unicorn on a plaque, but with the deer head, I think it would make it too heavy so I just left it with the cardboard back.  It also looks more like the initial West Elm inspiration and you save $90!

I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!
