Happy New Year: Keeping that Resolution the S.M.A.R.T. way!

Happy New Year, Everyone!

It’s that time of the year when you either create a resolution for yourself or end up breaking it, right?  I have heard and seen this all too often.  I have been in the fitness industry for a decade now and I can tell you that the ONLY thing that works with resolutions is goal-setting and more specifically, making it a S.M.A.R.T. goal!

This acronym comes up a lot for me:  in business, in life, and yes, in keeping fitness goals as well.  It has worked for me and my clients that are serious about reaching goals.  For me, you have to have an end in sight and once that end is there, you simply make a new goal!

Here is how it works:

Examples of SMART goals:

-I will complete the Nike Women’s half-marathon on Oct. 6, 2015 by training with at least 2 weekly runs.

-I will lose 1 lb. a month for 3 months by eating at least 1 fruit and 1 vegetable a day and walking at least 20 min.

-I will take 2 exercise classes a week at the gym before my birthday (June 5th).

-I will complete 10 pull ups on the pull up bar by April 4, 2015 by completing at least 1 pull up everyday.

-I will decrease my LDL cholesterol level by 20 points before my next doctor’s appointment (August 12) by decreasing my intake of red meat to once a week.

**Remember when setting your goals that it has to be realistic for YOU and no one else.  Also, try to choose a date sooner rather than later.  You can always make a new goal!

…And just like the good, there is the bad.  Here are some examples of some not-so-good goals.

Unrealistic Examples of SMART goals:

-I want to lose 50 lbs. in 2 months. (unrealistic to lose that much weight in so little time)

-I want to run a marathon. (unrealistic if you’re not a runner and don’t have a plan on how to get there every week)

-I want to eat better (we all do; but HOW will you be eating better & WHAT results do you want to see?)

Making my unrealistic goal into a S.M.A.R.T. Goal:

*Here’s how you change the previous goals (assuming they are realistic goals for the individual to complete):

-I will lose 10 lbs. in 3 months by eating 2 fruits, 2 vegetables, drinking at least 6 glasses of water and exercising at least 30 mins/day.

-I will run the Hot Chocolate 5K on March 16, 2015 by doing my walk/run program every other day.

-I will be eating better by eating at least 4 vegetables, 4 fruits, and 1 red meat each week.

 

Again, goal-setting by using the S.M.A.R.T. goal acronym is the only way I’ve ever seen anyone complete a goal in my 10 years in the Fitness industry, whether it be a New Year’s Resolution, for a wedding, for a baby, after a baby, for a race, and everything in-between.  So, let’s start anew with that new goal in mind! #iWILL
