Thrifty Thursday: DIY West Elm Inspired Dresser Makeover

Happy Thrifty Thursday!

Today I want to share one of my all-time favorite furniture re-do’s from when we first moved into our home, our West Elm inspired dresser.

When we moved in, my husband and I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on furniture, so we took on a lot of projects in the beginning.  This is one that I am most proud of and honestly, I wish I had a before picture of this dresser when we bought 3 years ago though I never thought I would’ve blogged about it, but here I am, 3 years later :).

Anyways, we went to our local Salvation Army and picked out a pair of dressers we thought had potential and lucky us, they were 50% off!  I think we spent about $60 for both.  They were a good size and had mid-century modern tapered legs & gold/bronze hardware & mind you the dressers were an off-white/yellow color, BLEH!

So, we used the West Elm dresser as our inspiration and the 5 steps below to re-do the dresser we bought and voila!

I bought everything at Lowe’s and the whole process took me a couple of days in between the weekend and workday evenings.

Here are the 5 quick & easy steps I used to make my old dresser new again:

  1.  Strip the Paint.  I used the CitriStrip Gel and it worked amazing!  You just put it on and wait.  Then, use a scraper to remove all the old paint.  It’s that simple.  ($11.98)
  2. Sand it Down.  Then, I bought a small sander along with sand paper to make sure I removed all the excess paint and evened out the dresser surface.  I used this awesome and compact Black & Decker sander that was really easy for this gal to use! ($39.99)
  3. Stain & Paint!  Next,  I stained the front & legs of the dresser with Minwax Wood Finish in Dark Walnut & let it dry.  Once it dried, I painted the exteriors of the dresser in a plain white paint that was leftover for our walls.  This was a satin finish.  ($7.77)
  4. Seal it!  Once the drawer was completely dry, I sealed the paint in with Valspar’s Clear Indoor/Outdoor Spray Paint.  ($3.58)
  5. Finishing Touches!  Lastly, I added the hardware back from the original dresser since they were in good shape still, but since, I have changed out the drawer pulls to ones I found on sale at Anthropologie. ($0 at initial re-do)

West Elm Dresser = $1399

DIY Dresser = $30 + $12 + $40 +$8 +$4 = $94!

I just saved myself $1300 and we love that we put lots of love into our dresser ourselves!  Hope this inspires you to make something beautiful again too!
